In Star Wars, it's the Empire. In your business, it's not the consultant down the street.
Your true enemy is the Beige Consensus. The collective, unspoken belief that to be taken seriously, you have to be boring. You know I've got strong feelings about beige. It is, and remains, the villain.
Choosing this enemy is the fastest way to bond with your audience, because it shows you actually understand their frustration. Most independent experts are stuck in a cycle of the exact same brand mistakes, keeping them completely invisible to the clients they actually want.
The Expert Trap is the most common mistake I see. It's the assumption that your degrees, your years of corporate experience, or your technical skill are enough to win business on their own. They're not.
In the corporate world, these things are the baseline. In the independent, service-based world, they're a commodity. When you lead with credentials, you sound like every other CV in the pile. You become part of the Beige Consensus, whether you meant to or not.
The status quo tells your prospects to hire whoever has the most years of experience. Your job is to tell them, clearly and confidently, that experience without a specific point of view is just a history lesson. This is where your positioning has to actually take a stand.
When you don't define an enemy, you fall straight into the same trap everyone else does. You start using "safe" language. "Trusted advisor." "Delivering results." "Tailored solutions."
That language is the status quo talking. It's passive. It's invisible. It acts as a wall between you and the high-value work you actually want. Premium clients don't want a "trusted advisor." They want a specialist who has the guts to tell them they're doing it wrong, kindly, but honestly.
If your brand doesn't challenge how things are currently done in your industry, you're not positioning yourself. You're just quietly participating in the market.
There's a specific kind of noise that hurts credibility faster than almost anything else. I call it the corporate hangover.
This happens when a solo consultant or small business tries to look like a big firm. Using "we" instead of "I." Stock photos of glass buildings and handshakes. Hiding behind a logo that could belong to literally anyone.
A high-value client hires a solo consultant or small business owner for the person, not for the imaginary "firm" behind them. When you try to look bigger than you are, you lose the one thing that actually makes you premium: your direct, personal authority. That lack of an authentic brand voice is one of the biggest flaws I see in independent practices.
To fix this, you need to identify exactly what you're fighting against.
🌶️ Is it complexity?
Maybe your industry makes things harder than they actually need to be.
🌶️ Is it outdated methods?
Maybe everyone's still clinging to a model that stopped working years ago.
🌶️ Is it "best practice"?
Often, "best practice" is really just a polite way of saying everyone stays mediocre together.
When you name the enemy, you give your clients somewhere to go. You're no longer just selling a service. You're selling a transformation from the old, tired way to your new, better way. That's the core of a genuinely unique positioning strategy.
A brand is not a logo. It's a reputation for a specific result. If your current marketing feels like you're just decorating a fundamentally generic business, that's one of the most costly mistakes going.
Stop trying to fit in. The status quo isn't your friend. It's the exact force keeping your fees low and your pipeline thin. Name your enemy. Take a position. Give your ideal clients a genuine reason to rally behind you, rather than just another safe, beige option to scroll past. Let's go girls!
